Megan,
We are short of volunteers for this years effort, seems that everyone loves the rinks, but it is always the same dwindling core of regulars that help out with the build and maintenance.
We need some new volunteers to keep this 10 year tradition going.
The lumber was not moved on Saturday, due to the uncertainty of the numbers of volunteers, the build date will be pushed back until we get the lumber moved to the park.

Good to know you son is willing to help out, stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.
Adam

3   Cornell Community Discussions / Community Health and Safety Forum / Emergency preparedness...are *you* prepared?  Dec 1st, 2017, 11:57pm
Started by sguido | Last post by sguido
Once upon a time I was active on these boards.  Then things got hectic...and I ghosted.

So did my posts, apparently.

Well, since I’m currently living a nightmare where I have some down time, I figured I’d pop back in.  Seeing as how my original post disappeared, I’ll make a relatively quick one:

Whether it be a natural disaster or something man made, you can’t count on help to be there right away if you call.  A smart investment that will pay out immensely if ever needed is to have a 72 hour emergency kit in your home.

What to put in?  Basically, anything that *you* will need to keep you safe for a minimum of 72 hours.

Everybody’s needs are different, but there are common denominators:
—food and water.  Keep a couple of cases in your basement, along with food you and your family will eat.  I used to recommend camping or military IMPs and MREs, but have read too many accounts of kids refusing to eat the “yucky bag food”.  So see what kinds of long life foods your family will eat and store them.  Rotate them through your pantry on a regular basis.

—prescription medications.  Ideally you should have a week’s worth to float you through an incident.

—over the counter medications.  Pain meds appropriate for your family make up; Gravol for nausea, Benadryl for allergies (two Benadryl equals one sleeping pill should the need arise); cold & cough medicine like NyQuil/DayQuil; laxatives for when someone needs to go, and Imodium for when someone needs to stop.  While at the drug store, grab some bandages, gauze, medical tape....or a pre made first aid kit.  Know how to use first aid supplies and don’t go above your skill level...leave the suture kit to those who know how to put in a nice stitch.

—flashlight and spare batteries, one for each person in the house.

—personal hygiene supplies....toilet paper, tissues, wipes, Purel.  Maybe the water has been cut off...search online now to learn your alternatives when flushing isn’t an option.

—personal sanity kits, one per person, tailored for that person.  If you’re without power for a few days, and you’re cooped up, distractions you enjoy may prevent fights.  Books, electronics that don’t need online access (powered by rechargeable batteries and a solar panel cell), cards, board games, colouring books...whatever will keep people busy and not at each other’s throats.

—warm blankets and such to bundle up and stay warm.  Don’t be the person that runs a generator inside and kills their family with the exhaust.  If you have a generator, know how to safely operate it.

—full tank of gas in the car.  You may need to relocate, and a tank riding on “E” won’t get you far.  While you’re at the car...chuck some thermal reflective blankets in the trunk, along with a folding shovel...heavy boots...candles.

—keep your phone charged.  Use texts instead of voice calls so as to not overload the system, which just might be on the point of crashing.

—if you have pets: food and water, medication, and hygiene supplies for them too.

Post any questions in this thread and I’ll answer when I can.

4   Welcome to Cornell New Home Communities / All Cornell Home Owners / Participation House & Christmas  Nov 27th, 2017, 2:29pm
Started by Megan | Last post by Megan
Hi Folks,

Every year my family has their annual Christmas party, but this year we are asking all our guests to bring something for Participation House as opposed to bringing a 'hostess gift'.  This will help give some folks in our community a little bit of a merrier Christmas.

Just thought I'd share the list of what type of things they would like and a lot of these things can be picked up at the Dollar store, so it won't break the bank:

•Magazines – all year long they'll take magazines
•Board Games – for ages from 5 – 12
•Craft stuff (NO BEADS) but things to do crafts for ages 5 – 12 year (boys and girls)
•Some scissors right and left handed ones
•Pencil crayons (I bought some that were thicker easier for them to grip)
•Washable markers
•Construction paper
•Glue both stick and glue that you squeeze

Lastly Gingerbread cookies.  They have to watch their weight because they are in wheelchairs and don’t get exercise, but at Christmas they are given these types of small treats.

I wish everyone a happy holiday, and that we always remember and care for the people who aren't able to care for themselves.

Why a home sold for more than another with same bdrm/bthrm count etc, you have to take into consideration if the interior of the homes have been updated since they were built.  So, you can't just look at the exterior of a home comparing brick to siding.   Mass improvements inside can add a tremendous amt of value to the resale of the home.

Yes I agree. However these were all from the new cornell village. There has been a correction nonetheless.

Anyone else having trouble getting Bell to bury the internet/cable lines?

When I switched to Bell last fall, there was a problem with the existing line so they stated they need to dig and bury a new connection. Then blamed cold weather for not getting it done then.

To temp give me internet and TV, they hung a line from my neighbors connection to my connection.

This spring I called to ensure request was still active, they promised it would be done by first week of July. Nothing.

They are now claiming the city hasn't issued the permit yet.

Just curious if this delay is being encountered by anyone else. I see cables strung all around Cornell, which makes me wonder if they're Bell cables...

Or are there companies that would have a small bin or large bag that they would pick up once full? Thinking I'll end up with a cubic yard of  waste, maybe bit more. Bins I see online are much larger.

41   Cornell Community Discussions / General Discussion Forum / Lack of lawn maintenance  Jun 16th, 2017, 8:25am
Started by Cinderella | Last post by Cinderella
There have been many articles lately about homeowners not maintaining their property.  The long grass and tall weeds bring down the overall look of the neighbourhood, making it look messy and unsightly.  While I agree with these statements, I would ask that we take a minute to assess somebody's situation.  If somebody's property is habitually in a bad state, that is one thing.  But if you notice a neighbour's property looking uncharacteristically shabby, maybe you could take a few minutes to check in with them and see if they are ok.  My property would have qualified as an eyesore because I have been ill the past month.  My neighbour, who is an absolute sweetheart, knew this was unusual for me and took the time to call to see if everything was okay.  When I explained what was happening, she provided me with the name and number of the lawn service she had been using (I had been unable to find anyone at all).  She said she did not want to sound rude but if I were interested, she provided me with the information.  I did not take this as being rude at all!  She knew something must be amiss because usually my property is taken care of.  Rather than call the city and file a complaint, she took the time to be neighbourly and showed concern.

Now I understand some people would not appreciate what they may feel is an intrusion but if somebody's property is looking bleak, and it is unusual for them, I would ask that you take a few minutes to check in on them.  Or mow their lawn for them if you can.  I'm sure it would be appreciated.

Is it advertised somewhere - how would anyone new to Cornell know or customers for that matter? I remember they used to put out a big sign for it at 9th Line a week before but haven't done that for the last couple of years - so just wondering how they get the word out?

Started by CornellMarkham_KCB | Last post by CornellMarkham_KCB
Last week after the clean up we weren't able to find all our signs.  This year 1 Little Rouge
4 Black walnut and 1 Grand Cornell signs went missing. Last year someone also took 3 of the Grand Cornell signs.
If anyone sees them around please let us know.
NB: We are also kindly asking residents not to take our signs or vandalize them as 40 signs cost almost $500 and as a small community group with limited funds we cannot afford to replace them for every event.
Thank you for your support and understanding.

Steve H, tell that to the morning dove that a Red Tailed Hawk caught in my back yard (townhouse in Cornell Village) and proceeded to pluck clean under my Pine tree.
It startled me when I came out of the garage.  Sitting under the tree about 10' away, grabbed the bleeding carcus and flew to the roof where it finished its lunch.

I don't think dogs are on the menu, there is probably easier prey out there.

If you really want to keep costs down. just frame it.
Get a licensed contractor to do that part.

Putting up drywall, taping and mudding is pretty easy.  You'll definitely cut costs that way.

Everything you want to learn about it is on Youtube.
Just finished a bathroom project and learned everything from watching every DIY show I could find and youtube.

68   Cornell Community Discussions / Business Employment and Services Forum / Need assistance with small tiling projects?  Apr 6th, 2017, 3:28pm
Started by Irishman | Last post by Irishman
Hello,

I’m offering my assistance for small tiling jobs at a LOW price.

As a DIY person, I'm offering my hands on experience either assisting or doing the job for you.
Just on my bathroom project alone, I saved close to $6,000.00 doing it myself.

I’ll supply the tools and you supply the material.  Or, if you like, I can come with you to get what you’re looking for.

My experience:

1. I tiled my entire kitchen floor from wall to wall.
To start, I tore everything out all the way down to the floor boards and built it back up by doing the following:  Leveling cement on certain spots, mortared subfloor before laying concrete wonderboard, screwed that down every 6 to 8 inches before applying mesh to the seams and mortar for strength before tiling and grouting.

2. Tiled back door mud area.

3. I gutted a closet and a 5’ X 6’ bathroom to become a 5’ X 17’ master bathroom.
Took out bathtub to create a stand-up shower.
Waterproofed shower using Schluter kirdi board/tiled/grouted stand-up shower and entire bathroom floor.
Installed floating vanities.
Hooked up plumbing for vanity sinks.
Installed shower fixtures.
Installed sink fixtures and water line connections.
Installed new toilet and water line connection.

I'm also able to put together IKEA items.

Pictures available upon request.

Kindest regards

Irishman.

Also, hubby and I have long commutes, and are wondering if there's any recommendations for daycares that have extended hours (e.g. 7/7:30 - 6:30 ish??) in the area as well?

Thanks in advance!! Smiley

I have to laugh at my neighbours house that just went up for sale the other day.
Freehold 18.5'x125' lot, 3BR 2.5 bath, partially finished basement, new furnace.  Yes it needs a roof, and fence repairs in the back yard, but the asking price $658k.
In my mind this should be priced at $700-720k.
Maybe this is priced for a bidding war, but setting the selling price $42k below market value seems ridiculously low.
