Re: Keep Markham Beautiful Maintenance By-law 2012-119
Dear Markham Resident:
Markham’s beautiful neighbourhoods are a source of pride for all of us who live in this thriving, diverse community. Each of us must to do our part to make sure that our neighbourhoods continue to be attractive, healthy and safe places in which to live. The Keep Markham Beautiful Maintenance By-law helps us do that by setting out the standards for the maintenance of private property and municipal boulevards within Markham.
As a municipality, Markham is responsible for many things that contribute to keeping our community beautiful, including tree planting and cleaning the City’s vacant lots and the boulevards surrounding them.
As residents, we are partners in keeping this community beautiful. One of our key responsibilities is to keep our yards and boulevards neat and tidy. The boulevard is the part of a residential property that is closest to the road, including the area between the road and the sidewalk. While this land is owned by the City, it is your responsibility to take care of and maintain it, along with your front, back and side yard. This includes but is not limited to:
Making sure the earth in these areas is covered by grass, plants or some other type of ground cover that keeps the soil from blowing or draining away;
Keeping your grass trimmed so it doesn’t grow any higher than 15 centimetres (6 inches); and
Making sure these areas are free of garbage, debris, animal waste and anything else that may cause a heath or safety danger to you, family, friends, neighbours or visitors.
Keeping our community beautiful is everyone’s responsibility. The effort each of us makes really does make a difference.
