A Metro sounds great.  Smiley  Wonder if it will be open 24 hours.

StrangeHuh Now that the Metro is close to being completed, i noticed a sign for Sobey's coming soon on the empty lot just north of the Metro on Hwy 48.

2 questions: 1) Why another supermarket (24 hrs probably) side by side and 2) isn't that lot supposed to be the Empire Cinemas.

Indeed, it is strange.  There is already a Sobeys at McCowan & Bur Oak.

So it's going to be a Food Basics and not a new cinema.  I'm referring to the (former) "mystery" building northwest of Hwy 48 and Castlemore Ave.

Hi Maplenut,

How do you know it will be a Food Basics? The shape of the front exterior sure looks a like a Metro.

if you google "metro and food basics' the following comes up.

Quote:
Food Basics - Metro.caFood Basics is a discount format providing low priced quality products to value-seeking customers in 116 locations across Ontario. ... www.metro.ca/corpo/profil-corpo/alimentaire/basics.en.html

Food basics and metro are under same corporate umbrella.

Drove by today and saw a coming soon sign saying so.  Makes sense since Food Basics and Metro are part of Metro Inc.

That's a bit disappointing. I was really hoping it would be a Metro as we already have a Food Basics along 48 (closer to 14th)

I know Metro is more expensive, but I like the quality and variety of their food a lot more.

As for the cinema, does anyone have any updates?

I wrote an email to Empire Theatres, and received the following response:

Hello again and thanks for continuing to touch base.† The project is still a go and we continue to work with the city of Markham on the many, many levels of approvals needed.† It will happen, just a matter of time.† Itís not happening quickly enough for us but we are patient with the process.
Thanks again.

I wonder if they have changed the location as I don't think Markham could support 3 theatres.

http://www.yorkregion.com/news/article/904924--eight-screen-movie-theatr e-part-of-markham-centre-project

The latest phase of Remington Group's Downtown Markham project includes retail shops, restaurants and an eight-theatre cinema that can seat 2,400.

Randy Pettigrew of the Remington Group told the committee they want to construct the buildings in the next year and that more details will be presented to council in the near future.

It makes sense for a theatre to be at the new downtown which would bring more energy and activity there.

However †parking in that area will be terrible in my opinion . That part of the city does not need 2, so let me assume they would be moving the existing one to that location.

The east end of Markham needs some areas for entertainment so that everyone do not have to drive to so far for good restaurants or to catch a movie. Which actually adds to the traffic problems on Hwy 7.

I'm assuming Stouffville, Uxbridge etc and  would enjoy having one closer her on Hwy 48

Besides Markham Road/Mainstreet/Hwy 48 is under transformation and a theatre on this stretch would be a bonus.
