The latest plans from the school board suggest opening in 2017 now. It would still need to be approved by the Ontario government.

It's funny...we moved here when our son was in grade two and you see all the nice plans for the neighbourhood including schools (both public elementary and catholic elementary) and high schools etc. Well, even after taking a year off from high school and then completing a 5 year university program, our son will graduate from university a full two years before a high school even opens in Cornell. Talk about about a snail's pace. Not to mention that, over 15 years after we moved in there is still no local grocery store, restaurants etc. etc. I'll probably be eligible for the local retirement homes before any of that happens!

Steve, do you know if it has been confirmed that the Secondary School will be located across Buroak from the Community Center?

The School board currently owns the land just south of Yee Hong.  They would need to swap lands with the builder across from the community centre.  There has been some talk but I don't think it will happen.

Our oldest son was born after we arrived in Cornell.  Assuming it opens in 2017, he will be in his last year of high school and will probably not want to switch.

I thought there was a land swap being negotiated between the Catholic school board (across from CCC&L) and the YRDSB.  (from a discussion with Colin Campbell)
I thought the only stumbling block was the slight difference in the size of the 2 parcels, and that YRDSB was looking to pick up a small piece of land to equalize the property areas.
Maybe this fell through?

This was the last information I read about the swap.

My daughter was born in 1999 -- a month after we moved into Cornell -- she will be graduated from highschool before the Cornell Highschool is built. So sad.

According to the update I had from Colin this week, it sounds unlikely that the switch will happen between the Catholic and Public school lands.

Architects already started to work on the design for the current location of the future high school. There is also an approximate cost difference of $4-5MM more for the lot across from the community Centre as land further south in Cornell has a higher value. It would require the city to pick up the tab for the cost difference, rework on the design and delays.

Perfect, this means that our beautiful Community Centre will have a over grown gravel parking lot/dumping ground across from it until the Catholic School Board decides to build a high school on the site.  Judging by their lack of haste in building an elementary school on the site in the middle of Cornell Village we will have that to look forward to for a decade or two.
Maybe this may be a good spot for the Community Garden.

That was the reason for asking because if the switch occurs then at least that area would develop sooner.

Sounds like the city was pushing for the switch but they can't force the school boards to do it. Plus the cost factor.

Not looking forward to overgrown bushes in the next 20 years.

Here is an update from a city meeting in June of this year on "PROPOSED SECONDARY SCHOOL SITE EXCHANGE IN CORNELL BETWEEN PUBLIC AND CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARDS AND THE POTENTIAL ACCOMMODATION OF SOCCER FIELDS WITHIN THESE SCHOOL SITES "

The Cornell High School was officially announced yesterday. It is opening in the fall of 2016 at Bur Oak and Almira at a cost of $38M. This is great news for Cornell. Smiley

This will be the first year of high school for our youngest daughter and only a five minute walk for her and our son each way. No bus ride for them! Woo-hoo!

It is good news for Cornell, if a little late for us. Our son was in grade 2 when we moved here and is currently in 4th year University (after taking a year off after high school). If only we could get some decent retail shops & services, restaurants, cafes etc. before I have to leave this earth. Too much to ask?
